Caregiver helping an elderly woman during the night time.

There may be times when a family member needs round-the-clock assistance. Loved ones with advanced dementia or those who are recovering from the effects of a stroke or other debilitating condition can benefit from 24-hour care delivered right in the home, here in the Southwest Florida area.

24 Hour Care Experts

We at Home Instead Senior Care specialize in 24-hour care and are currently helping many clients around the clock. Our experience with these cases over the last decade and a half has taught us many things about how to ensure success for the family and CAREGiving team.

We provide 24-hour care in shifts. We have found that providing long-hour service in shifts allows us to guarantee that your loved one is being cared for by someone fresh and alert. This is important in all cases but critical when caring for a senior who is:

  • A potential fall risk
  • Occasionally up in the middle of the night
  • Prone to wandering
  • Bed-bound
  • Requires more intensive care

Care Team: A team of our compassionate CAREGivers assist your loved one throughout each day, including throughout the night.

Communication: Our CAREGivers are specifically trained on communication and hand-off between shifts so the on-coming CAREGiver is up to speed and ready to continue great care.

CAREGiver Round-Tables: Our teams of CAREGivers will meet periodically to discuss issues and share techniques further improving the overall care to your loved one.

Peace of Mind: We have a team member live-answering our phone lines 24/7, that can handle any issue that comes up throughout the evening hours. Some of our clients want assurance that our team is awake and alert. In those cases, we have our CAREGiving team call in every hour, on the hour.

Home Instead Senior Care® of  Southwest Florida offers highly trained, trustworthy CAREGiversSM to assist your loved one around the clock. Call us at (239) 433-4025 to discuss how we can tailor this care to meet your family’s needs.

Considering Live-In Care?

We no longer provide live-in care. In addition to the benefits of having a fresh, alert CAREGiver at all times, there were changes to the law governing live-in care. Effective January 1st. 2015, the Department of Labor modified the Companionship Exemption regulating live-in care. The modification meant that all caregivers, including those providing live-in care must still be paid minimum wage and overtime consistent with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Paying a caregiver their rightful wage and any overtime is the right thing to do. Details of the law can be found on the Department of Labor’s (DOL) website: https://www.dol.gov/whd/homecare/

Know what you are getting with Live-in Care:

  • Does not reduce the cost of 24-hour care in all cases, due to overtime pay
  • Requires verification that you are paying the caregiver(s) in accordance to the FLSA
  • Client must not require help during the night hours
  • Need to prove through documentation that the caregiver was given adequate rest as defined by the DOL
  • Need to provide adequate housing for caregivers, potentially leading to a dependence
  • Imposes a large liability on the senior and/or family if the caregiver is in the home, but “off the clock”

Be aware that many registries, with independent contractors, pass the burden of fulfilling these requirements onto the family.

Private duty caregivers are also independent contractors and those arrangements also require the family to fulfill the DOL requirements. And as with independent contractors from a registry, the senior or family is the employer and required to meet all DOL regulations, follow Affordable Care Act requirements, and carry insurance. Here at Home Instead we handle all of these requirements for all of our employees and carry liability insurance, worker’s compensation insurance and unemployment coverage.

Therefore, we believe that 24-hour care in shifts through our employees removes complications for the family and provides alert, excellent care.
