For most of us, the holidays are a very stressful time of year. But, for family caregivers, it can be incredibly stressful. Between all of the holiday preparations, family obligations, and caregiving responsibilities, it can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. One of the holiday tasks that can be overwhelming is shopping. Fitting it in with everything else you do can be a yeoman’s task. Here are four tips to help you simplify your holiday shopping and prioritize your caregiver wellness.

Tip 1: Prepare your list

Make a list of who you’d like to buy gifts for this year and plan around a budget. Jot down up to three gift ideas for each person to help you stay focused when you’re in stores while still remaining flexible. Because of inflation and rising prices, don’t be afraid to make cutbacks to your list or the dollar value of your gifts. Give gifts this year only to your closest family members and friends if necessary.

Tip 2: Shop early

The sooner you start chipping away at your holiday shopping; the less stressful your holiday will be. Spreading out your purchases can also take some of the strain off your budget. Try to have your holiday shopping completed before December 1st. You’ll feel much more relaxed, and you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday traditions and activities without worrying about shopping.

Tip 3: Duplicate gifts

You can save a lot of time by picking out a few gift ideas and gifting from the same top items for each of your recipients. For example, pass out a favorite book to your siblings or gift all your family members matching pajama bottoms and slippers. It may sound too easy, but it can become a fun family tradition.

Tip 4: Return/Exchange/Pick-up without leaving your car

Because of the pandemic, many stores will now come to your car to handle shopping transactions, not just grocery stores. Many large retailers, and some smaller ones, let you call or order online, schedule your pick-up, and they’ll come out to your car with your order when you arrive. No need to worry about parking, and you’ll save a ton of time this way.
